An important marker of a woman’s health is her ability to ovulate and have normal menstrual cycles. Menstrual disorders are problems or abnormalities related to a woman’s normal menstrual cycle.

Common menstrual disorders include:

Abnormal uterine bleeding

Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) is irregular bleeding from the uterus that is longer or heavier than usual or does not occur at your regular time. For example, you may have heavy bleeding during your period or in between periods. It is sometimes caused by changes in hormone levels. It can also be caused by problems such as growths in the uterus or clotting problems.

Amenorrhea

Amenorrhea is the absence of menstrual bleeding. This is usually hormone related and can occur when a woman does not have enough body fat (from dieting, heavy exercise or illness) to support healthy menstruation.

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD)

PMS is considered to be physical and emotional distress prior to menstruation. Common symptoms include bloating, lack of energy, swollen or tender breasts, headaches, and cramping. Some women will also feel sad, angry, irritable or anxious. PMDD can occur when these symptoms are severe. PMS and PMDD are often treated with lifestyle changes to prevent the symptoms from occurring, or medications to treat the symptoms when they do occur.

Uterine Fibroids

Uterine fibroids are lumps that grow on the inside, outside or in the wall of the uterus. They can cause heavy menstrual bleeding, low back pain, fullness or pressure in the belly, pain during sex, and an urge to urinate often. Fibroids are usually harmless and most can go untreated until they shrink on their own later in life. If the fibroids are causing significant trouble, there are a number of treatments available, including surgery.
